From the manufacturer's website: It eliminates up to 95% of frizz while making curly hair more manageable. This safe alternative to traditional harsh straightening systems infuses the hair with a unique formula of amino acids, proteins, silk and pearl into the hairâs cuticle. The system safely smooths frizzy, curly hair into beautiful, soft and silky hair. The process, that bonds the powerful (yet gentle) formula with the heat from the CHI iron and dryer, dramatically improves the condition, shine and smoothness of even the most unruly hair types. Results typically last up to 4 months.
Bottom line: It actually works.
Honestly, I Was Skeptical. Emphasis on "Was".
When I heard about Farouk's new CHI Enviro American Smoothing Treatment, I really didn't pay a lot of attention to it. I've heard of "these kind of treatments" before, and they always end up to good to be true. Is there really a safe, non-damaging product that makes hair less frizzy, curl more manageable, and flat ironing safer and easier? Many people even claimed their hair to be healthier after the treatment. My reaction: yeah, right. This is the kind of thing clients ask me for all the time. Sure many products out there make promises like this, but I've never really found anything that truly delivers.
But, being the curious and investigative type, I started with some basic online research, made a few phone calls to people that have preformed the service, and talked with a few ladies that had the treatment done to their hair. Try as I may, I couldn't find a single negative comment. Not one.
How It's Done
Getting the CHI American Smoothing Treatment is fairly simple. The product infuses amino acids, proteins, silk, and pearl into your hair resulting in healthier, stronger, smoother, shinier hair. Your professional stylist will first perform a consultation on your hair and determine which smoothing formula (or combination thereof) is best suited for your hair type. After a thorough cleanse with CHI's specially formulated Purity Shampoo, the smoothing product will be applied to your damp hair and allowed to process for 10 to 20 minutes (depending on your formulation).
Next, without rinsing the product, your stylist will blow your hair out using a CHI hair dryer and CHI ceramic round brush or a paddle brush. These specific tools are important for setting the smoothing product into your hair.
Next, your hair will be flat ironed, at 410 degrees to cure the product into your hair, with a CHI 4-button flat iron. Each 1/8" section of hair should be flat ironed five times. Your stylist may use a few drops of the CHI Enviro Smoothing Serum after flat ironing to add shine and manageability.
Now you'll be free to go home until the next step. It is recommended that you leave your hair down for the next 24 hours, without headbands, hair ties, or even sunglasses to hold your hair back off your head.. Your hair may feel a little weird, kind of like forgot to rinse the conditioner out of your hair. This feeling is perfectly normal and may vary based on your hair and your stylist's skill level at applying the product (I learned this the hard way on my own hair).
Post Service Blow-Out
If you're comfortable flat ironing your hair thoroughly and own a CHI flat iron, you can do this step at home. If you're less than handy with your blow dryer and flat iron, have very thick or course hair, or do not own a CHI flat iron I'd recommend returning to your stylist for this second step.
Twenty-four to 48 hours post service you (or your stylist) will shampoo and condition your hair with the CHI Enviro Smoothing Shampoo and Conditioner. Next, it's important to blow-dry and flat iron your hair with a CHI flat iron.
After this blow out has been preformed, be prepared to be blown completely away. Every single one of the clients I've preformed the treatment on have had significantly softer and shinier hair that blows dries quicker, with noticeably less frizz (if any at all), and flat irons faster with fewer passes. Less drying time and fewer passes with the flat iron results in huge gains in hair health and less damage for your hair over time.
Most of my clients that previously had curly frizzy hair report that their hair air dries beautifully and their curl looks and feels amazing, styles easily with less (and sometimes NO) product, and has improved manageability.
Maintenance Products & Advice
Maintaining the American Smoothing Treatment is as simple and if you follow these recommendations. It is recommended that the CHI Enviro Smoothing Shampoo, Conditioner, and Smoothing Serum be used on a regular basis post treatment. Hair should be washed every-other day (at most) to extend the results. I've been using these products with great success and absolutely love the smoothing serum. It's like a drink of heaven for your hair (and it smells amazing, too). The CHI Enviro line also includes a wonderful deep conditioning masque and to-die-for shine spray. Both help bring out the softness and shine in your new hair beautifully. The entire line of products are reasonably priced and will help extend the life of your treatment for up to four months.
After your hair has been treated with the CHI Enviro American Smoothing Treatment you can color, highlight, and style your hair normally. I have colored clients hair with CHI Permanent Shine Color immediately before and after the treatment with no issues, color loss, or hair damage.
It is recommended that pony tails, tight hair ties, clips, and pins be avoided for the first week post treatment to avoid denting your hair. Loosely pulling your hair back out of your face for short tasks is okay, but should be used minimally. If a hair clip or tie does leave an unintentional dent in your hair, it is typically easily repaired with a flat iron.
You can expose your hair to chlorine after treatment, however repeated and regular exposure may result in the treatment not lasting as long, as chlorine can be quite damaging to your hair (whether you've used this smoothing treatment or not). It's important to care for your hair properly with any chlorine exposure.
