Treat Your Hair to a Healthy Fall Makeover

When summer comes to a close most women find themselves longing, just a bit, for a hair makeover. Let's face it, the sun, water, sand, chlorine, ponytails, and highlights have left our hair feeling a bit dry and bleached out. A healthy fall hair makeover can not only help heal some of the damage from the summer sun, but also keep your hair in prime condition to face the dry, brittle months of winter.

1. Get a Haircut

Back-to-school haircuts were always a big deal when I was growing up. The end of the summer is still probaby one of the best times to schedule a haircut. Even if you're growing your hair out and just need a trim, by the end of summer exposure to UV rays, chlorine and ponytails have quite likely left your hair in desperate need of fresh ends. So, schedule a haircut and give your hair an opportunity for a new start.

2. Clarify

A good clarifying treatment can be a brilliant start to getting your hair in beautiful shape for fall. Clarifying shampoos, at home treatments, or in-salon treatments help remove product build-up, chlorine deposits, and other gunk that may just be weighing your hair down. Basically, by clarifying your hair, you're giving yourself a clean canvas to start fresh with. There are a few tips that will help make your clarifying treatment more successful, so be sure to check out this article for some great clarifying tips and information before you start.

3. New Color

Just like wearing white after labor day is no longer taboo, drastically darkening your hair in the fall isn't completely necessary these days, in fact, I don't recommend huge color changes in the fall. While darkening your hair for fall is certainly acceptable and fun, I like to think of a fall color makeover being more about freshening up your look and creating richer color. After all, fall exposes our hair to fewer activities that may cause color to fade, so darker color, "bronder" blondes, deeper reds, or brighter coppers will get more mileage than these colors see during the summer months.

The primary key to great haircolor in the fall is to take care of it with color enhancing, sulfate free shampoos, conditiioners, and treatments. Get more great tips for extending your hair color this fall.

4. Protein

The harsh elements of summer can strip your hair of protein, causing your ends to fray or your hair to become weak and brittle. After you get those damaged ends trimmed off with a great new fall haircut, pick up a protein treatment to strengthen your locks and prevent further damage. This article breaks down some of my favorite protein treatments. One word of caution when it comes to protein: a little goes a long way. Protein is great for your hair, but too much can make your hair brittle. Keep it balanced with a good deep conditioner, and limit your protein treatments to once or twice a week. You can also strengthen your hair from the inside out by implementing a hair healthy diet.

5. Moisture

Keeping a healthy level of moisture is of key importance to maintaining the healthiest hair for fall and for keeping your hair and scalp from becoming dry as we enter thewinter months. Fall is the perfect time to switch to a more moisturizing shampoo and conditioner. Additionally, a good weekly deep conditioner that's appropriate for your hair type, texture, and thickness will make a world of difference in the way your hair looks and feels all through the fall months. Get ahead of the moisture game in the fall and your hair will thank you this winter.
