2010 Top Ten Weird, Strange, and Odd Hair News Stories

Hair Raising Tales from Around the Globe

By , About.com Guide

When truth is stranger than fiction, I want to read all about it. These bizarre hair related news stories made me shake my head. Check out these strange, but true news stories from 2010.

10. The Situation is Hairy; Snooki De-Poofs Her Look

The biggest hair news out of Hollywood this year comes from a group of misfit teens with more hair gel than brain cells. The cast of Jersey Shore and their ridiculous, giant hair made headlines all year long, but none so shocking as when Snooki claimed she would no longer don the giant poof on the top of her head. Snooki, "The Situation", and the rest of the gang's infamous antics on the MTV show did lead to the biggest Halloween costume spoofs of 2010. The real question is, will Snookie's vow to de-poof her locks cause her fame and momentum to crash? Are these people really famous, or did the American public just like laughing at their odd hair? Will Snooki re-embrace her poof in 2011? I can barley wait to find out.

9. First Topless Hair Salon Opens

I suppose it was just a matter of time before someone married necessity with fantasy, and one young Australian entrepreneur did just that when he opened the world's first topless hair salon in 2010. Hotcuts promises a great haircut with, an even greater a view. I get the concept, but as a hairstylist (and one that's quite familiar with the hair sliver) I don't think I'd want my assets exposed to all job hazards (like itchy hair and irritating chemicals) on a daily basis. Do you suppose it's likely that the wives in Sydney no longer have to beg their husbands to go get a haircut?

8. Oregon Hair Dresser Blows the Whistle on the Brazilian Blow Out

One Oregon hair dresser refused to walk away from a career she loved. When Molly Scrutton began feeling ill on the job, she followed her suspicions and helped uncover the hair raising truth behind the ever-popular, award winning Brazilian Blowout with shocking levels of formaldehyde. Scrutton's alert prompted officials across Canada and the U.S. to take action, pulling product from the shelves and demanding answers from the manufacturer.

7. Lady Gaga's Hair-a-Tard

As if Lady Gaga, her hair, and her outfits couldn't get any weirder. If you thought the meat dress from the 2010 VMA Awards was odd, check out Lady Gaga in her barley there hair "leotard" from September 2010. She paired this oddety with fishnet tights and a pair of shoes that quite frankly, left me speechless. Oh Lady Gaga, how I love your weirdness. Thank you for keeping us entertained in 2010.

6. 8-Year Old Girl Kicked Out of School for Smelly Hair

When I was in the third grade I managed to give the boys on the playground a show via careless jungle gym play in a flowy skirt. I doubt anyone on the playground remembers the incident, but I do. I was horrorified. Imagine the trauma to an 8-year old after being suddenly kicked  out of school, because her hair smelled and caused her teacher to feel ill. So what was the horrible smell in question? It was an olive oil hair conditioner. But even more damaging than embarassment, this smelly situation prompted debate about race and the difference between black and white, as the little girl's father describes in his blog

5. De-baptizim With a Hair Dryer

Yes, you read that correctly. Did you know that your hair dryer could be used for religious purposes? Well, duh. How else would one de-baptize themselves? I'll give it to the atheists, it certainly is creative. I can't comment on it's effectiveness.

4. The Tri-Met Bus Barber Gets 28 Months in Prison

Amataure or just plain weird guys that get a cheap thrill out of cutting women's hair (especailly on public transit) beware. Cutting unspecting womens hair, for what bizarre reason I am unsure, has landed a Portland, Oregon man with a 28-month prison sentence. As part of a plea deal, Jared Walter pleaded guilty to witness tampering in June of 2010. He faces a number of similar charges. Creepy!

3. Woman's Nose Collapses from Cutting Hair

No, it doesn't only happen to Michael Jackson my friends, barbers can now live in fear of their noses collapsing from nasal hairballs of epic proportions. I'm serious. This really happened. In England, a woman claims that more than 30 years of hair irritating, collecting, and infesting her nasal cavity caused serious infection that lead to the collapse of her nose. I've been traumatized and paranoid since reading this article.

2. Whale Sperm: A Hair Conditioner That Works

If perhaps you were wondering if a romantic encounter with a whale would leave your hair soft, shiny, and tangle free, you were right. While the experience is (I'm sure) less than romantic, you can pick up a tub-o-whale semen for less than $10.00 and you too can experience all that whale semen has to offer for your hair conditioning needs. Don't take my word for it. I have yet to figure out if I can stomach the process, but Cat Marnell from the LemonDrop took the challenge. Her "whale tale" is a must-read.

1. Jam Made from Princess Diana's Hair

The late Princess Diana's fame, from her charitable acts to her beauty, has been exploited in every way imaginable since her death in 1997. In 2010, the exploitation of Princess Di reached epic proportions when one jam maker "artistically" added bits of the Princess's hair to his jelly. You don't have to re-read that last sentence, you read it correctly the first time. It's true, and apparently the royal jelly sells for the low-low price of for $7.60.
