Many hair accessories are fun, flirty, and can make even the worst hair days a little easier to manage. Other hair accessories should have been left at the store, in your drawer, or perhaps back in the 1980's. From the old and tired to the absolutely rediculous, check out this list of hair accessories that just about everyone should avoid.
1. The Banana Clip
I'll be the first to admit, I was the queen of banana clips in the 90's. I was also the queen of the perm, frizz, and hair that likely inspired the bobble-head doll (go big or go home). It was trendy then, but it's just tired now. For the most part, the banana clip gives your head a "mane" type effect, you know, like the back of a horses head. Let's move on from the banana clip, and update that style to something a little less animalistic, like the pony tail.
2. The EZ Comb
Generally speaking, if some loud guy is talking you into buying a hair accessory on television at 2:00 in the morning, it's probably not the best 2 AM idea you'll ever have. Sure, the EZ Comb is simple to use and gets your hair out of your face, but just because it's functional doesn't mean it's going to be a fashionable piece. Does anyone really think this thing looks good?
Now on a personal note: I'm sorry Mom, I know you love your EZ Comb, but we are all teasing you about it behind your back.
3. The Bumpits
Speaking of hair accessories that have been all over the television and in every single drug store in the country, the Bumpits has to be one of the more comical. I'll admit, I do see the need for a product like this, and I understand where it would be very handy for the less skilled self-hairstylist, but it executes rather poorly. I've witnessed the Bumpits in public. What I mean by that is: I can see that piece of plastic in your head because it hasn't been installed properly or your hair is just to thin to cover it up. So, if you're going to use a Bumpits, be sure to read the directions and take your time to make sure you get in in there right. Showing your Bumptis is like having your Spanx show. No one needs to know your secrets.
4. The Scrunchie
The one hair accessory that I had more of than banana clips was scrunchies. It was absolutely necessary to perfectly match my scrunchie with every outfit. In fact, it was only recently that I finally let go of my giant scrunchie collection (although I promise it's been nearly a decade since I went out in public with one). So, do you need to eliminate every scrunchie from your life? Well, no. Functionally, scrunchie's are awesome. You can safely and loosely pull your hair back with out breakage that can be caused from tight hair bands. They are the perfect hair accessory for camping, sleeping, sports, and lazy Sundays at home. Let's just keep the scrunchies away from public appearances for this decade, okay?
5. Faux Hair Clips and Pony Tails
While it may not be necessary to completely avoid the faux hair clip accessories, I would urge you to proceed with caution. If the color doesn't match, the texture is way off, or the faux hair is old it will be painfully obvious that you have a pile of plastic hair on the top of your head. I clearly remember the day we discovered that my sister's faux pony tail was more green than brown. Not one of her prouder moments. As with the other bad hair accessories, functionally faux hair can be a great quick fix for many hair issues, and can be a fast and easy way to style your hair. Be nice to your faux hair, take care of it, and style it properly or you could find yourself with a whole slew of new issues.
