2011 MTV Video Music Awards Hair

The Good, the Bad, and the Hot Hot Messes on the Red Carpet

By , About.com Guide

The MTV Video Music Awards are for sure my favorite red carpet for scoping hairstyles. This is the event where celebrities bring their a-game. From the comfort of my couch, I have once again, ooohed, aaaahed, pointed, laughed, and gasped (thank you once again, Lady Gaga). Here's a rundown of the best, the worst, the hot messes, and the biggest shockers of the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards.

Best Pink Hair: Katy Perry

I like this. I don't know why. I most definitely wouldn't recommend that anyone color all of their hair pink, but it works on Katy Perry (who is a natural blond, you know). I'm loving the retro waved bob and it just shines in this pretty pink hue. Is there a color that doesn't work on Katy Perry, I wonder?

Worst Pink Hair: Nicki Minaj

i guess if Katy Perry is going to do it best, someone has to step in and do it worse. What on earth is going on here, Nicki Minaj? I understand that making a statement is what the VMA red carpet is all about, but this is just a mess. All of it. Leave this kind of craziness to the pros, like Lady Gaga.

Best Curls: Demi Lovato

I'm in love with this look on Demi Lovato. The curls are spectacular and so is this pretty ombre color. She just looks pretty, confident, and put together.

Hottest Mess: Nicole Polizzi

Ahhh, Snooki (a.k.a. Nicole Polizzi from Jersey Shore). I've tried and failed many times to understand why this woman is famous, but I think this may be a clue. She's not just a hot mess, she's the hottest mess. By definition, I think a hot mess is someone who puts a lot of effort into being hot, and it just turns out messy. The individual aspects of Snooki's look aren't that bad. Sure she could have a little less glitter on her eyes, and her dress could be a little more flattering, but overall they aren't horrible. I actually like her hair and the unique spin on the ombre look (it's a far cry from her "Snooki Poof" that's for sure). When she puts it all together though, it's just not put together. I wonder if that's the whole point.

Best Hair: Beyonce

When i saw Beyonce grace the red carpet with this hairstyle I officially said "oooh". It's just pretty. The color, the style, and it goes perfect with her glowing baby bump.

Worst Excuse for a Hairstyle: Adele

I don't get it, and I don't even know where to start. This giant, teased, bee-hive inspired bouffant is doing absolutely nothing for Adele. Nothing. It's not cool enough to be retro, it's too big and over done to be trendy. It's just very Halloween-ish.

Most Shockingly "Normal" Look: Britney Spears

I think I secretly missed the days when Britney Spears was a hot mess. She's so normal now. Yes, she looks nice, and pretty, but where's my bald, crazy, Brit-Brit? Sigh. Good for you for getting your act together, Britney. Bravo. Now, where's Lady Gaga?

Best Retro Hair: Vanessa Hudgens

Finger waves are appearing all over the red carpet, and Vanessa Hudgens does an absolutely beautiful job of showing us how this 1920's look can be both modern and chic. I adore this. I can see the fingerwave trend take over bridal and special occasion hair in the near future.

Biggest Hair Fail: Deena Nicole Cortese

Another Jersey Shore "celebrity" makes her mark on the VMA red carpet by showing up with this hot mess of bad hair. Um, excuse me Deena, your extensions are showing. Fail.

Most Shocking: Lady Gaga

Of course Lady Gaga was going to be the most shocking. We were waiting for it. MTV made us wait until the first performance to see her (no red carpet debut this time). She showed up to the 2011 Grammy Awards in an egg, but even that couldn't top the meat dress of the 2010 VMA's. We knew this was going to be huge. Anything can happen at the VMA's. Who knew she was going to show up as this guy? Yep, I was shocked.
